What is ultraviolet disinfection?

Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection is a proven, chemical-free method for controlling microorganisms in water systems. It uses short-wave UV-C light at wavelengths between 260 and 270 nanometres to break down the DNA of bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens, killing or deactivating them to prevent reproduction.

Widely recognised as a primary treatment method for potable water, UV disinfection can achieve up to a 3-log (99.9%) reduction in targeted microorganisms — providing a highly effective safeguard for both commercial and industrial applications.

Why choose Complii?

How we can help.

Protect your people, property, and business. Here’s why we’re the right choice for ultraviolet disinfections.

Safe, effective, and sustainable disinfection

UV disinfection offers a clean alternative to traditional chemical methods, delivering reliable pathogen control without altering the taste, odour, or chemistry of the water. It produces no harmful by-products, supporting safer and more sustainable water treatment across all environments.

Highly effective against microorganisms

There are no known microorganisms resistant to UV light. It effectively neutralises bacteria, viruses, algae, moulds, and yeasts, including pathogens such as Legionella pneumophila and hepatitis viruses. This helps ensure water safety and compliance in even the most sensitive applications.

Pre-filtration for optimal performance

To ensure maximum UV exposure, systems should be installed with pre-filtration to remove sediment and suspended solids. This prevents particles from blocking or "shadowing" the UV rays, allowing consistent and efficient disinfection throughout the process.

Low maintenance and reliable operation

Complii’s UV disinfection units are designed for simplicity and dependability, but like all UV systems, they require regular servicing. Lamps typically last around 8,000 operating hours before replacement is needed, while quartz sleeves should be replaced at the same time to maintain optimal light transmission and performance.

Engineered solutions from Complii

Our engineers supply, install, and maintain UV systems tailored to your site’s needs, from single-point disinfection for small systems to large-scale installations integrated into complex water networks. Each solution is designed to maximise efficiency, ensure compliance, and provide long-term reliability.

Your questions answered.

  • It uses UV-C light to damage the DNA of microorganisms, rendering them inactive and unable to reproduce. This eliminates pathogens safely and effectively without chemicals.

  • UV treatment is safe, chemical-free, and environmentally friendly. It does not change water quality, create by-products, or alter taste or odour, making it ideal for potable and process water systems.

  • In many cases it can. It may be used as a standalone method or as a complementary process to chemical disinfection, enhancing overall system protection and compliance.

  • Lamps and quartz sleeves typically require replacement after 8,000 operating hours. Regular inspection and cleaning ensure the system continues to operate effectively.

  • Complii’s UV systems are suitable for a wide range of settings, including potable water supplies, industrial process water, cooling towers, and healthcare environments where hygiene is critical.
