Your questions answered.

  • Educational facilities must comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Regular fire risk assessments, system maintenance and evacuation drills are required to protect pupils, staff and visitors. Schools should also follow Department for Education (DfE) and HSE guidance for safe building management.

  • Schools, colleges and universities must manage Legionella risk in line with HSG274 and ACoP L8. Regular temperature checks, tank inspections and Legionella sampling are required to keep hot and cold water systems safe, especially in buildings with intermittent use such as dormitories or sports facilities.

  • Electrical installations in educational buildings should be tested every five years in accordance with BS 7671. Routine PAT testing of classroom equipment and regular inspections by a qualified engineer help ensure safety, reduce downtime and maintain compliance with HSE and local authority standards.

  • Good air quality supports health, concentration and learning outcomes. Schools must monitor CO₂ levels and airborne contaminants in line with COSHH and DfE ventilation guidance. Routine air quality checks and HVAC maintenance help create a safe and compliant learning environment.
