Your questions answered.

  • Retail stores must comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Fire risk assessments, alarm and extinguisher maintenance, and clear evacuation procedures are essential to protect staff, customers and stock. Regular inspections help retailers maintain safety and meet insurance and local authority requirements.

  • Retail environments with staff facilities, kitchens or customer restrooms must manage Legionella risk under ACoP L8 and HSG274. Regular temperature monitoring, water tank inspections and system disinfection help maintain hygiene standards and safeguard public health.

  • Retail properties should undergo fixed wire testing (EICR) every five years in accordance with BS 7671. PAT testing of tills, lighting and refrigeration units is also essential to prevent electrical faults, minimise downtime and ensure compliance with workplace safety regulations.

  • Clean, well-ventilated air enhances customer comfort and employee wellbeing. Retailers should maintain HVAC systems and monitor air quality to comply with COSHH and workplace health regulations, preventing issues such as mould, odours and airborne contaminants.
