What is dry and wet riser installation?

Dry and wet riser installation involves fitting fixed pipe systems within multi-storey buildings to allow firefighters rapid access to water during an emergency. A dry riser is an empty pipe that can be connected to a fire engine at ground level, while a wet riser is permanently filled with water, maintained under pressure from a storage tank or mains supply. Both systems are critical in helping the fire service control fires quickly and safely.

Why choose Complii?

How we can help.

Protect your people, property, and business. Here’s why we’re the right choice for dry and wet riser installation and maintenance.

British standards and compliance

Dry and wet riser installations must comply with BS9990:2015, which sets out strict requirements for design, pressure performance, testing, and ongoing maintenance. These standards ensure the system operates reliably, giving emergency services confidence that water will be available exactly where it’s needed.

Professional installation services

Our engineers design and install riser systems tailored to each building’s layout, height, and fire risk. Before installation, we work with the local fire service to confirm the required locations of inlets, outlets, and pipe routes. Every system is fitted using high-quality components and fully tested to ensure compliance and readiness.

Testing and maintenance

Once installed, dry risers must undergo visual inspections every six months and a full wet pressure test annually. Wet risers require similar checks to verify continuous water supply and pump functionality. Regular servicing helps prevent leaks, corrosion, and pressure loss, ensuring long-term performance and compliance with regulations.

Preventative care and repairs

Before conducting a full wet test, we can perform a dry integrity check to detect potential leaks or damage. Any issues are resolved before the system is pressurised, protecting pipework and ensuring accurate results. This preventative approach helps maintain system integrity and reduces long-term maintenance costs.

Additional safety features

We also supply and install compliant dry and wet riser signage as required by British Standards, helping the fire service locate connection points quickly in an emergency. For large sites with private hydrants, we provide inspection and maintenance to ensure hydrants remain operational and accessible at all times.

Your questions answered.

  • A dry riser is empty until the fire service connects it to a water source, while a wet riser stays permanently charged with water for immediate use.

  • Dry risers require six-monthly visual inspections and an annual wet pressure test. Wet risers are tested and maintained at least once a year to confirm pressure and pump performance.

  • Only qualified engineers should install and service dry or wet risers to ensure they meet BS9990 requirements and local fire service standards.

  • They allow firefighters to access water quickly at upper levels, removing the need to run hoses through stairwells and corridors during an emergency.

  • Yes. Depending on the building’s structure and fire strategy, riser systems can be added or upgraded to meet modern safety standards.
