Your questions answered.

  • Commercial fire alarm systems must comply with BS5839-1:2025, which sets out how systems should be designed, installed, and maintained. Systems are classed as L (life protection), P (property protection), or M (manual). Most commercial sites require an L2 or L3 system, confirmed through a fire risk assessment.

  • A commercial fire alarm system uses smoke and heat detectors to identify early signs of fire and trigger alarms for evacuation. Unlike domestic systems, commercial alarms are interconnected, monitoring the whole building and sending alerts to a central control panel. Many systems can also notify emergency services or activate fire suppression equipment for a faster, coordinated response.

  • Design begins with a fire risk assessment to identify the required coverage. A qualified designer specifies the system type, device placement, and power supply, ensuring compliance with BS5839. Once installed, you’ll receive certification confirming the system meets all standards.

  • Most do. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires a suitable detection system in nearly all business premises. The type and scale depend on the size, layout, occupancy, and risk level identified in your fire risk assessment.

  • A system is mandatory if your premises are large or complex, involve high-risk activities, include sleeping accommodation, or are used by vulnerable individuals. Your fire risk assessment determines exactly what is required.

  • Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, employers must install and maintain a compliant fire alarm system, complete regular fire risk assessments, train staff in fire safety, and test alarms regularly. Failing to meet these obligations risks fines, prosecution, and endangering lives.
